Gorgeous....What are the dimensions of your tub and how many plants do you have in there? I want to achieve a similar look this summer. Thanks!

I'm not growing them in pots, but will put them in a large planter box about 3'X6' in my driveway. I've sown extra varieties of nicotiana seeds just because they are so darned nice to have around. I started mine indoors and have Heaven Scent, Hummingbird Apple Blossom and Hummingbird Lemon Lime.

Ispahan, I just went out into the cold to measure the old washtub, its 11" high and 23" across. There are only 3 plants growing in there.

Your going to love 'Fragrant Cloud', they smell so wonderful in the evening.

This year I'm also going to grow some out in the garden plots, I'm sure they will grow magnificent.

Thank you so much for checking on your pot size for me. It was actually your photo (the same one you posted on the Nicotiana 'Perfume Deep Purple' thread last summer) that inspired me to want to grow Nicotiana 'Fragrant Cloud' this year. I can't believe there are only three plants in that tub. I would have guessed 5 or 6.

I can't wait to smell the fragrance. Do you remember if it wafts or not? Also, did your plants set a lot of seed?

Yes, they smell heavenly in wafts. LOL

They did set alot of seed in the fall, I'll let you know if they self-seeded this season, hopefully soon ;)

That is great news about the wafting. I plan to have them in large pots all over my porch this summer so I can enjoy them while relaxing in the evenings.

My little seedlings seem to be growing very slowly compared to the old-fashioned vining petunias that I started (which are already flowering and are truly heavenly scented). I hope that they are not suffering from root shock since I only recently pricked them out into individual containers. But it could also be the cooler temperatures of my grow room, too. I was reading that these plants thrive best in warm temperatures so I put them down on seedling heat mats yesterday. Time will tell. I have high hopes for these little babies.

I have been reading about other types of Nicotiana having an easily damaged tap root. Have you ever noticed Nicotiana 'Fragrant Cloud' being sensitive to transplant shock?

No, I've never experience transplant shock with Nicotiana, I sow lightly and I wait to prick them out when they are about 2.5cm high and give them a good drink following their transplant.
You could also take little scissor prunerÂs and snip away the unwanted so that you don't disturb the chief plant.

When sprouted they are very very tiny and do kind of sulk at the beginning stages, just like Coleus, but they'll be ok once planted outdoors with lots of heat and sunshine, they will grow like gangbusters! You just wait and see ;)

That is very good to know that these plants transplant easily. I think they are growing slowly just because of the cooler temperatures (it never gets above 65ºF in my grow room right now). Now that I have them on heat mats, I expect that they will take off. I have given them only one very mild application of fertilizer so far, since I did not want to burn their roots at this tender stage. They should be due for another dose very soon.

Next year I will definitely sow them more thinly. I always think very few will actually germinate and then they come up thick as thieves just to spite me.

I think I may have been right about the heat. The seedlings seem to have really perked up and their newest leaf is coming in very large. I was surprised to see them when I woke up this morning.

My seedlings are now quite vigorous little things. I hope the weather breaks soon so I can harden them off and pot them outdoors, otherwise they will soon outgrow their seedling flats. I can't believe how LARGE the new leaves are coming in!
