japanese maple help

Hello everyone i am a newbie to the bonsai world and a friend gave me his japanese maple (he thinks it is dead), ive had it about 5 months now and am watering when the soil is dry and been feeding it once a month but no buds or leaves have appeared at all?? so i have never seen it with leaves on which is a great shame can anyone give me any advice or point me in the right direction please

My guess would be that since it's May, unless you live in the frozen north, your friend may be right, the tree is probably dead. However, maples are fairly inexpensive, go get a new one and start again... only beware... Bonsai is addictive!

Scratch the bark with your finger nail.
If it's still green underneath, it has a chance.

i have just scraped a little and it seems to be brown i hope its not dead it seems fairly old i would'nt like to think i killed it or maybe that was why i was given it.
how can i put a pic up so you good peaple can see it and if there is anything i can do

Egg - Take Wags' advice... read up on J. maple care and get another tree. Yours appears to definitely be dead.
