Hi Summerf, I'm thinking about putting up a window box for my north-facing house, also... maybe some day.

The first thing that came to my mind when you mentioned the orange impatiens was maybe some coleus that would compliment the orange. Or, possibly white begonias or impatiens. I've grown white bacopa in partial shade with moderate success. Also, if you have access to a Superstore, I found some white lobelia at the garden centre last year that did really well in shade. Oh, one more - I highly recommend blue browallia for shade - it would look really nice with the orange impatiens... hmm, I might have to try that. The orange impatiens, with blue browallia, and maybe some white impatiens, too.

If you like clashing hot colours, e.g. orange and deep pink, fuchsia would work well (not an annual, I know, but they work well as bedding plants).

Lucky you; I would love some windowboxes on the north side of my house but won't hold my breath! First thing I thought of was blue lobelia and/or browalia like previously mentioned. Torenia also does quite well in those shady conditions. You could stick in some tuberous begonias as well for some height; there's some great orange begonias. I love blue and orange together!

I have 5 window boxes on the north side of my house. I have really good luck with impatians, annual salvia--Victoria blue is one of the ones I use. Then I use vinca vine for trailing. The salvia gives nice height.
