I would go with New Guineas... I think your sun would fry your double impatiens. I have used double imp. in morning and evening sun but not middle of the day sun.

I would also use superbells. I think all petunias do better in part shade/sun. Superbells do get quite big, so if you do not have large boxes I would do alyssum.

Well that is totally confusing : )

Just a tip, be careful not to get petunia foliage wet, you will get blight and the plant will slowly begin to weep and then turn brown.

Yes 8-1 sun is too much for double impatiens, in my experience.

I would plant 1 per 2' liner in regards to superbells.

I grow them in part sun, much like your window boxes and they do great!

I think superbells by themselves would be great! I would plant two per liner in that case and they will grow on eachother and get taller (12" high and 36" long).

They only drawback is one color unless you put different colors together in the boxes.

Keriann--thank you so much! Whenever I ask someone at the nurseries if I can plant them in less than 6 hrs. full sun they say no. I just needed to know that it is possible---that someone has done it, to give me enough hope to give it a shot. Thank you for answering all of my other questions as well--you are great!

Hmmm, well I think either would be fine, I don't think sun until 1:00 is too much for the doubles in my zone.

Totally different look, these two plants. I would base the decision on the overall look/feel and level of interest/contrast you'd like to achieve. Keep in mind you can get some nice foliage effects with various New Guinea cultivars.

Oh oh. Now you have one person saying your East morning sun would be too hot, and one saying it wouldn't be. I'll break the tie for you =:)

If you have no trees or buildings blocking any of that sun at all for any of the morning, it would, in my opinion, be way too hot.

I have various flowers facing that direction, and there's no way impatiens would last. It can get pretty darn hot.

However, gardening is trial and error. Try one impatiens in that spot and see what happens. Plant the rest of the impatiens in a shadier spot.
