sunflower wedding

my daughter is having her 2nd wedding the long weekend in September. They live on a ski hill, with the back yard a mass of wild flowers which only some will still be blooming by then, theres also lots of weeds.(they are being married back there) She would like to have sunflowers and I was thinking about starting some smaller varieties for pots and a few tall ones as well,trouble is I don't live there so she would have to start them and shes not a real gardener. I would have posted on the wedding forums but I wasn't able to for some reason. I would appreciate some input, thanks in advance!

She would do well to call her county Ag Extension Office and talk to someone about this. They should be able to tell her what flowers would be blooming that time of year. There are many flowers that have the look of sunflowers: heliopsis, helenium, rudbeckias, just to name a few. I would advise her to not plant just one kind, but to hedge her bet with several. As a rule, sunflowers don't do particularly well in pots. If she's not much a gardener, they're probably be an even worse bet.

You did not say where this wedding will take place. Knowing the location is the key to know what suggestions to make.

thanks Donnabaskets,you make some good points.purpleinop the wedding is taking place in their back yard in Sunpeaks, B.C. close to Kamloops. Its very rocky and as I said has been planted with all sorts of wild flowers but is also very weedy, has been for a few years.I would like at least a few sunflowers so we'll see I guess.Thanks for you help!

BTW folks if all went well the couple has been married for 4 years by now. I don't know why but the new Houzz regime seems to be dredging up absolutely ancient posts and people miss the teeny weeny grey date on them. It's happening all over the garden forums.
