Consider using more of a magenta-purple with the orange. One of my favorite combos is the tulip Princess Irene with tulip Purple Prince. Anagalis 'Wildcat Orange' is orange with a tiny purple center. Mixing it with the purple wave petunia and some other good stuff could be a nice combo.

I've never grown them, but the Kiss Gazanis might be nice. Both the Golden Flame and Orange are beautiful. I'd love to try the Mahogany but they are sold out of that one.

Nasturtiums or California Poppies are good candidates for containers; and both come in orange.

I don't like marigolds either, but I grew a nice French marigold the past few years that really was good looking. I like how it's a smaller, simpler flower than the big ball-type marigolds. Here's a pic:

I also second the California poppy suggestion, unless your summers are really long and hot (they'll wither). But if you're zone 4, it might be a good summer flower for you. They can handle a little dryness, too, which is good in a container.

Taller orange-flowered plants suitable for containers include Tithonia ('Fiesta Del Sol') and Canna 'Wyoming'.

Oh, I second the suggestion to plant orange daisies. I planted "Orange Symphony" (osteospermum hybrid) last year. Mine bloomed all summer long.

I bought the Proven Winners brand. They come in all colors, but the orange is the most striking (in my humble opinion).

There are purple and orange bi-color violas or pansies, those would be pretty. It's a little late to start viola seeds.

I started some inside for the first time this year, was surprised they came up because I can't control the temperature. Then I had to prick them out and transplant, always was afraid to do that. They are doing ok so far in a large window box.
