Jin techniques on Maples

Hello All,

I've got a large laceleaf in a cascade style that I've had for years. It's very healthy, except for the fact that a major leader has died back. I think some buds will develop to allow a new leader, but that will take a while and It may be better to restyle it in more a a leaning form. The dead leader could contribute to the composition as Jin, but I don't see much jin on deciduous trees like Maples and I was wondering if there were good reasons why I shouldn't try it. I know dead wood is much more prevelant on conifers in nature, but I imagine it happens on maples in nature too. Any ideas thoughts or techniques for this.

Thanks,

Steve
