When I planted them last year I also could not tell. I planted them all any old way for 10 days each in its own pot. Then I dug them all up and those that had growth started I replanted right side up. The rest I just replanted until another week had passed. Out of 64 bulbs I ended up with 55 plants, the rest rotted. They seemed to prefer a temperature of about 80 to 85 degrees. Good luck with yours. Al

It's been awhile since I planted caladiums but I *think* the "puck" actually has a slight dip or concave surface in the middle and if so, I believe that is the side that faces up.

In doing a little more research- I've discovered they are difficult bulbs to determine planting direction. There was one individual who didn't know as well, planted them and then had to dig up the ones that didn't grow and turn the bulbs (said they were starting to bud but were upside down). Also, learned another tid-bit of information. It is way to early for me to plant these in PA. The suggested planting date is after 6/1. The bulbs hate to be cold and will rot if the ground temperature is below 65-70 degrees...... Geez, guess I may be diging up the ones I did plant. All the bag says is after danger of frost.

I would do what is recomended for anemone. Plant them on the side so, using your imagination, the puck would roll as opposed to slide. That way the top and bottom are on the sides and they can ajust growth accordingly, as opposed to possibly being completely upside making growth difficult.
