Fancy bonsai pots

I saw displays at recent bonsai meets and noticed that the pots nowaday are much fancier than the old days. Some have full dragons or flower designs along the rim. Some have feet that are fancier than my victorian sofa's.

Could it be that the old way of bonsai presentation is dieing out, and since bonsaiers are getting hipper the emphasis start shifting to the containers instead the real thing?

Peeps oh-ah on a fake, weird looking, rock caved pot contained a horrible tree, but ignoring a splendid tree in a plain clay pot.

What do ya think? Are we becoming bonsaipotters?

Interesting comments ooloo!
However my feeling about the pot and the plant are that the two together are the bonsai! The pot should compliment the plant and vice versa!
As far as fancy pots are concerned. There are very ancient bonsai pots that are very ornate.

Great link Terresteral Man. About a month ago I went up to the spring show and did my simi yearly tour of the Bonsai collections. Actually, "our government" didn't provide the collections, Japan, China and American bonsai artest did. It is really worth the trip even if you do have to go to D.C. to see them. Zack

I dont think the penjing trident in page 13 is anyway an ancient, or a bonsai.

The pots of those "bonsai" specimens in 14,15 are not ornated, they are classic.

The pot should complement (brings to perfection) the whole arrangement, whether it is a penjing or a bonsai. It is not susposed to compete with the tree, as in the penjing picture. Take your finger and cover the pot in the penjing picture, look at the picture for awhile. Now remove your finger, look at the picture again. I say that particular pot contaminates an otherwise well perform composition.

About the article, Alfredo is a Public Affairs Specialist and I doub that his bonsai's experiences are much better than most of us. Jack probably first threw a fit seeing the penjing, but calmed down and elated seeing pictures of himself... Afterall Alfredo didnt need Jack's approval for publishing the article anyway ;-)
