how do I use chicken wire?

I planted a bunch of crocus bulbs this fall (I have never had crocus before) and I am very upset to find a bunch of shallow holes where all my crocus should be coming up! I have read about chicken wire to enclose the bulbs. How do I do this? some people say to make baskets out of the wire? Can i just lay the wire down and secure it to the ground? and then remove it once the crocus start to bud? What about planting other flowers like perennials in the same area? I have tulips and daffodils and never had a problem with the bulbs getting eaten. Do crocus hold some special attraction for squirrels?
