I dont know alot about that tree, Im sure someone else in here will be able to give you that info. What I do know is being a beginer. Ive been into the hobby for less than a year but have always had a green thumb.
First off, untrained plants at Home Depot, a local nursery or a bonsai shop are all the same except the price. So buy 2-5 cheap one gallon plants from where ever. Some of these will die, ya cant save them all. With that get a few books, I prefrer 'The bonsai handbook' by David Prescot, however, everyone has there preference. Then search the internet for all your questions. Im sure if you typed in 'care for cottonester' in google you would end up with alot of good sites. Moving along... People will tell you to buy all these tools. What I did is got some plants. I found out when to transplant them (best time of the year for each species). Then waited till then and bought some pots and then got my basic tools. I have 2 authentic bonsai tools the rest are pliers and other tools from Lowes and chopsticks from the chinese resturaunt. Dont jump in head first, test the water and see if you do like this hobbie. I like this site cause there are alot of the same people here all the time and you kind of get to know them.
Im kind of rambling here... Glad your into the hobbie. If you come across the question, research it on the internet. If you want to share it, post it here (seems like people do not post experiences here and just alot of good questions). If you want an explanation, this is a good site too. Bill is right on. must be cuase hes from sw florida lol. hey bill i'm from naples hehe. when i started i had the same idea.(not killing a nice bonsai). so first i started with seedling right out of my own back yard. one crab apple and one azalia. this worked good for me cuase its free, and they would have just gotten mowed anyways. if you do enough research you should find one of your native plants to be suitable for bonsai. if not, like bill said home depot, or lowes. my third bonsai was from home depot. a 6$ blue star juniper. it was a little tricky to train but i guess thats what i get for gowing 2$ cheaper than my original pick(japanese dwarf juniper). i would post pics if i could find my camera :(
