I had one last year in part sun, morning only....and it "punied out"...just slowed wy down on the blooming, so I put it back into the sun and it started getting more flowers.
Try it....can't you move if it doesn't do well?

Thanks, Linda. I was afraid of that. I just don't think it will do well here tho it looks gorgeous in a black cast iron Victorian-style urn. It's Superbells 'Plum', a beautiful wine color.

I have a good spot for it in full sun but don't know what I'll put in that urn now that will look as great and will flower well in not-full-sun. I have too much impatiens already. Wish they'd invent more flowers for shade--:).

Hi ginny. I'd seen that superbells plum on a website highlighting the "newest-hottest-must-have" annuals, and I was tickled to find one in the local garden centre. I love the orange-yellow throat it has, and though not the right colour I was going to plant it with either sunbini (rich yellow) or a soft yellow bidens. Good luck with whereever you put your plant.

As for shade bloomers, I haven't tried these but have read good reviews for them on other threads on this GardenWeb, plants like browallia and torenia were supposed to do okay(torenia) and great-browallia- in the shade. I think the monkey flower (mimulus) is supposed to perform fairly well too.

Why not use it where you want it, but drag it out into the sun once a week or something?

Thanks for the idea, Mehearty. I did try something like that once. Actually, I had two of something and let them take turns in the "good" place. It was more work and more $ than I want to commit--having already a very long to-do list, like everyone else.

This spot is very visible so I can't leave it empty for any length of time. Plus it's a shock to the plant to switch back and forth between very different conditions. But it does work for awhile. Thanks again.

Humm... mine did very well in part shade last year, morning sun only. I just planted a new variety since I liked them so well last year.

Well, just an update on this, in case anyone else wants to try it. It looked so good where it was that I decided to leave it and then move it if it stopped blooming. It continues to bloom--with daily fertilizer--but not nearly as much as in full sun. But it still looks good enough so it's staying where it is. Thanks for all the advice.

It just goes to show the importance of growing zones. Million bells are a variety of petunia and therefore don't like hot sun in the heat of the day. What works in Arizona won't work in my zone 3. Petunias planted in that much shade in my zone wouldn't flower

Actually, Calibrachoa aren't a variety of petunia but well established in their very own genus. They are closely related but the genetic differences are important, extremely so when it comes to essential cultural requirements.

Calibrachoa actually thrives in the heat, in the full sun, and won't exhibit the melt-out that their cousins in the genus Petunia will.
