Will separating muscari result in more blooms?

Hello Garden Web-ites! It's been awhile.
When I moved into my house 20 years ago I was surprised and delighted with a mound of darling little grape hyacinths in the back yard. It was a dense patch of purple and I loved it. But now the blooms and even leaves are few. Is this because they need to be separated?
