Zinnias are easy from seeds, either direct sown or started indoors under lights. It should be easier to find out what you were doing wrong than to travel to Iowa. (grin) They usually come up in two or three days and grow rapidly.

However, some of the dwarf zinnias don't have a true white. For example, Magellan and Dreamland have ivory, but not white. The older Peter Pans do have a true white if you can still find them. The new Profusion species hybrids have a true white, and the mulitiflora single Crystal series also has a true white.
