what ate my marigold?

overnight, they are all gone. flowers and leaves, everything. obviously they were eaten cos all i had left were the thin stalks. i live in ventura county, southern california, i am certain there are no deer around - we live in a new urban development. does anyone have any idea what happened to my marigold? they vanished about a week after i planted them.

I've had similar situation when I plant marigolds and I believe slugs which come out in the wee hours morning may be the problem. You can buy something that goes around the soil to deter the slugs. Once the plants mature, they leave the plants alone.

Slugs will not eat a whole plant over night.
And if you do use slug bait, please use the non toxic kind made with ferrous sulfate...saft for peat and other out door critters.
