You can type a list of your plants, put scotch tape over them, and cut out to place under pot saucers or, make one (or more) little 'maps' indicating the approx. position of your plants on a given surface (in a group), though if you move them around, you need to remember to change the map. But the thing is that you should remember them after a while, certainly ones you've had for some time, and if using a popsicle stick in the pot for a few wks or whatever helps you to learn the name, use it - it's better than being at a loss, and does your neighbour really care?

Although sticks labels are a good idea and a lot of folks use them, I don't for a couple reasons.

People pull them out to read them, dislodge soil, and jam them back where I don't want the stinkin' stick :-). Even in the wrong pot. I've had kids pull them out of pots and go play with them. That is disastrous if they are a few hundred seedlings of a hybrid you've crossed a few different ways and need a record later after they bloom so they can be identified:-).

A simple solution for your bonsai may be write the name in pencil on the bottom of the bonsai pot. I keep a log on my laptop of certain plants along with pics of how they progress over time.

Plants in plastic training pots get an aluminum tag wired to the pot with info of when started, what cultivar or graft, and things like that. That way little brats and thoughtless adults don't screw things up:-).
