mini dahlia

Hi!

I bought 4 mini dahlia plants from my local garden center and put them in a built-in planter on my deck. They are so cute. My question is this, can I bring them in before any chance of frost, and nurse them over the winter, in order to replant them next spring? Will they survive and even bloom?

Hi Tambo,

There is a dahlia forum, and if you post your question there, I am sure you will get a lot of responses.

But in general, I would say yes. Dahlia is perennial. If they are grown in the ground, people usually let the first frost to kill the foliages and then dig the tubers out for storage over the winter. If yours in pots, it might be easier to just move the pots inside.

I read up on dahlias because I was interested in hybridizing them (still haven't done it), but I don't have hands-on experience (yet). Others might give you better answers.
