I've never done it that way, but why not give it a try? Try to be careful not to break off the roots.

Dave, I think that will work, but if your sprouts are tiny you'll have a tough time separating and planting them. I control the germination of my own plants by sowing seeds in a good seed starting mix in pots. I use a mix that has moisture control or some kind of wetting agent to help hold water. This has made a huge difference in germination rates compared with those peat-based potting soils which dry on top and can be quite worrisome. I let the seedlings live in the pots for as long as it takes for them to develop a few sets of leaves. During this time I feed them with diluted fish emulsion (there probably are liquid starter solutions but I have no experience with these). I begin a regular feeding ritual about a week after I transplant my new kids! Happy gardening. Maureen
