My father "decorated" the beds by making a lining of marble waste (Calcium carbonate powder) but is disappearing due to watering... although I urged him not to do so as it will make our already high pH soil more alkaline but he said "look, your plants are already growing good, so a little calcium carbonate wont hurt"...lol

Betty, I live in Karachi, Pakistan... which is near coast and is an arid zone...

I am not using pesticides in it because of butterflies, bees and many birds...

Donna, most of these fern like plants are Sulfur cosmos (cosmos sulphureus) variety is "Polidor"... they are on buds now... while the one in extreme bottom is a french marigold volunteer... marigolds can grow in our summers but bloom only in winters..

In among the red portulaca? Wow. That looks like no cosmos I have ever seen. Will be on the lookout for it. Is it sown in very thickly to get that full effect? I love it.

I pinch them when they were 4" tall, now they have formed dense bushes... there are total eight plants in this 28 feet long bed with red portulaca...

I guess I have some seeds of this cosmos left in the packet, let me know if you want them..

It's a horrible 107 degrees outside and I stopped watering for a few moments to cool off inside and happened upon the pictures of your garden. How wonderful. I'm with Donna. I didn't realize the ferny looking greenage were Cosmos. Only a few varieties of Cosmos will do well in my climate because of our heat combined with high humidity (most just rot) so I haven't grown them for a long time. I may try again because I like yours so much. You have done a marvelous job training them. The Zinnias are perfection too. Do your Portulacas close during the afternoon?...Maryl

Red Portulaca open up by 7:30 am and close by 12:00 pm, I have a yellow one which closes earlier and a white which closes by 2:00 pm.

If you water them before the flower opens then the duration can be extended for 2-3 hrs more..

If you want a moss rose bloom which remain opens till evening then go for the "Sundial series"..
