My American Giant sunflowers are growing nicely, currently about 6 ft+, however a while back I noticed roots starting to sprout at the bottom. From a certain point up on the stalks, the stalk is hairy, and below, smooth. Can I add some soil up to and around that area where it is smooth they're trying to grow additional roots? I just thought it'd help them from toppling over, and of course the more roots the better, no?
