that is probably your first clue ...

Ha! I guess I was!! :) :) Hmmm, probably the same slugs that had a go at my basil earlier in the year! I can't tip them out because they're gigantic pots with large camellia shrubs in them, but I'll have a look around when I get home. (on a plane right now.)

Note to self: marigolds probably do not repel slugs. :)

Posey, you might as well jot down that marigolds don't repel much of anything! Perhaps they are a trap crop. I don't plant them anymore because of the spider mites.

Slugs, grasshoppers, different kinds of caterpillars, and even beetles are all possibilities. I don't remember if rabbits or deer or voles munch on them.

BTW.. go out at night and find out whats on the plants in the dark ...

that is when you will find slugs.. if any ...

Well I'll be darned... I distinctly remember my college horticulture professor saying to plant a few marigolds around the veggie garden to help repel pests... Of course, that was a LONG time ago, so maybe we've learned otherwise! :D
Oh, I definitely have slugs at night- they used to annihilate my basil before I started surrounding it with coffee grounds, AND they gather for nightly parties in the cat food dish! But as far as checking the marigolds at night, there's nothing left to check!
Interesting to learn about the spider mites, too- I planted marigolds around the bases of my potted Meyer lemons last summer & the bugs were horrible! Bugs of ALL kinds, for that matter, but I never ascribed it to the marigolds. Oops. :P

Ha! Even college professors fall for some of those old husband's tales, lol. We all do, at some time or another.

There is something that certain marigolds are very useful for and that's parasitic nematode control. If high populations of some varieties of plant parasitic nematodes are identified in a garden plot, grow a cover crop of these marigolds for a season to allow for your regular veggies the next season. Note that I said 'cover crop ' of marigolds. Sowing a few seeds here and there, or planting a perimeter won't do anything.
