2nd year Petunia

I planted a bed of purple petunia last spring. It grew well and bloomed til almost Nov. Somehow, 60% of them survived winter and bloomed again this summer.

What can I do to help them survive another winter? They are noticeably bigger this year than last. Some even felt somewhat woodsy. Will they keep growing or max at certain size?

I am in San Francisco Bay Area, near Stanford University.
