I personally never really liked the checkered varieties enough to buy them..but your photo is winning me over some ;)

That is a beautiful Colchicum. I think I have that one too, but yours is way ahead of mine.
What will you have in your garden then after Colchicum?

Sorry iris gal, if it makes you feel better there's a good chance the gophers died doing it :/ but I'm sure reinforcements have already come in to fill the ranks.
Dbarron, how dare you not think my child is the cutest thing!? I like the checkered look enough, but this one has nice big blooms that stand up well, so it looks good even with the plain pinks nearby. You only really notice the pattern when close up, bUt of course who wouldn't want to sit down next to it for a close up anyway?
Pitimpinia- you've seen through to my colchicum problems. I have trouble finding something to plant it with. A ground cover would be nice, but I need a tough short one that won't mind the spring leaves on the colchicum. As it is now I'm looking at mulch most of the summer!

Try ajuga reptans, kato_b. That's what I have around my Colchicum.

Another clump is surrounded with Phlox subulata. That clump is bare in the center where Colchicum is. I just spread a fistfull of short Feverfew seeds on the bare spot and added a sprig of Lamium maculatum. I'll see what that spot looks like next year.

I am watching for my Colchicum 'Water Lily'. It was covered with Alchemilla mollis earlier, but I have trimmed them all down, so I hope the Colchicum will really stand out this fall.

It seems that not many people plant Colchicum, don't they?

So, whoever chewed on my single 'Waterlily' is now pushing up daisies. Hmmm.
Paid an awful price for it.
