lets say 14 days to germination ... thats 8/23 ...

then 45 to 60 days to bloom .... and that is already 10/23 ...

plus.. babe seeds thrive in the warm days of a damp spring.. with cool nights .. and frankly.. that does not describe August in any part of the country ... keeping seedlings alive.. might be very hard ...

all that said.. if you have the seed... try a few in some pots .... it would bring you more pleasure to try.. rather than just mope about it.. i think mother earth would not allow you to manipulate heat and water as easily ...

What about pansies and other cool weather plants? (Assuming you have a cool place to start them: basement under lights, for instance?) I will be starting mine over Labor Day week-end, which means you could likely be doing the same now. Pansies, dianthus, snapdragons, Giant Purple Mustard (edible and ornamental), Red Russian Kale (also edible and ornamental), even lettuce...These should go until you have really truly cold weather. (Have no idea when that would be for you.) Just a thought. And Ken is right. Better to try, just by virtue of staying busy and engaged in something creative.
