Best border annuals for dry poor soil

I'm looking for short, say 4-10" annuals that self-sow and can fill a border, yet be drought tolerant. Some of my candidates are Ageratum, Brachycombe, Dianthus nana giganteus "Super Parfait Raspberry", [also some Dianthus deltoides that are perennial could work], Linanthus androsaceus, Penstemon barbatus "Navigator", Phlox cuspidata "Crystal mixed", Phlox drummondii- "Baby Buttons", "Creme Brulee", "Phlox of Sheep"; Silene colorata "Dwarf Pink Star", Silene occulata "Patio Mixed", "Ruby Flax"; Verbena "Adonis Mango", "Quartz Waterfall", "Sandy", "T&M Dwarf Jewels, etc.

Has anyone grown any of the above or others that need little water and don't need deadheading in order to bloom? I think Phlox may need deadheading, which I probably wouldn't really get around to doing.

Thanks, Nancy
