planting site?

I don't know if there is a better forum to post in, but I need help! My main flower garden is along the front border of my house. I've got about a 4 ft. deep bed. On the back I have planted my daffodils. Then there is a line right in front of that where the gutter above seems to overflow, so I plant in front of that. The house faces the West and I'm in North Mo., 1 mile from the Iowa border. I have mums, Bees Balm, daisey, and salvia etc. as far as perineals go, but I've planted Zinnias and Cosmos planted. My problem is that they, (Zinnias and Cosmos) seem to lean forward to catch the sun (they get full afternoon sun from noon on...)so I end up with a foot and half space where there is nothing during the summer months. I have done this 2 years now. They are very showey, but next year I'm going to do something different. Any suggestions to remedy my problem? Am I always going to have the problem facing the West?
