Yes, the seeds are great for the birds and for you! These have been grain crops in South America for years. The seeds are used in making breads, in cereal and ground into a flour. It has a nice nutty flavor :)

I've been contemplating buying seed for Amaranthus caudatus be have a strong suspicion the deer and rabbits would eat these before birds ever got a crack at the seeds.

Does anyone know if this plant is just deer/rabbit/groundhog candy?

They're so beautiful and striking but I can only plant so many things that critters eat before they have a chance to grow and/or bloom.
