winter pansies in container okay?

I just bought my daughter-in-law a flat of pansies. She has a wooden box made by her dad that would hold the transferred pansies perfectly. Question: will they make it over winter that way, or are they better off in the ground? I'd like to give these to her tomorrow and will appreciate any advice.

I realize that pansies look ratty in the roughest parts of winter. Maureen

I have put pansies in smaller pots with not much luck. I think the roots get to cold.

You're in Zone 6? Pansies in containers there may be iffy. In zones 7 and higher, they do just fine even if the temps drop down to around 20o. I imagine you have much colder weather than that.
The violas (johnny-jump-ups) are even more cold hardy than the larger "pansies."
