i wouldnt be surprised if it is one plant ....

it can get as big as a foot or foot and one half wide for me .... all attached to one stem ... and one set or roots ...

there isnt anything to divide ..????

unless of couse you happen to have two plants in the pot ...

My Alyssum (carpet of snow) sows itself easily. I've even clipped some of the flower heads and placed them around the garden wherever I want it to grow, and that trick works just fine..no problem. However, 'carpet of snow' is the only SA I've managed to do this with.
I'm not sure if they will grow in clay soil. My soil is sandy loam and fairly acidic. Certainly it wouldn't hurt to clip a few flower heads and place them where you'd like SA to grow in your garden - you won't be harming the mother plant that way. A few months ago I pulled up some SA plants that were growing around my pindo palm because there were too many of them. I tossed them on the compost pile and the things seeded themselves around my compost pile...I now have several rather large clumps of 'carpet of snow' in full bloom in that area. By the way, it has been my experience that SA benefits from a light clipping every now and again.

I live too far north, I think, to treat alyssum as anything more than a half-hardy annual. But I can vouch for its doing well in clay!

My last garden was like 6" of clay over bedrock, amended as I could but still basically just clay. There were many things I didn't have a prayer of growing, but alyssum was not one of them. Grew like gangbusters. By the end of the season, one plant would be the size of a wedding bouquet.

Good idea to scatter some clipped flower heads. I'll try it. I'm so glad to hear it does well in clay and acidic soil.

My neighbor is terrible with plants, and the only thing that looks good in her yard is alyssum. It does well in alkaline clay soil, intense sun, & frequent drying winds. I believe it is perennial in our zone, so it may be in yours.
