Don't forget the near-relative of carnations, Pinks. Snapdragons are also fragrant, come in many forms and colors, and can be started indoors many weeks before it is time to set them out.

Sweet alyssum and heliotrope are highly fragrant. So are some pansies, though you have to plant quite a few of them to really catch the fragrance. Don't forget sweet peas!

Sweet Alyssum is the best bet for a fragrance that wafts in the air. Nasturtiums and the common "stock" (Matthiola Incana) are also fragrant and worth a try.

Also, as mentioned, sweet alyssum - but I never have luck, they always peter out on me, but I just love that honey-like scent!

Petunias are another fragrant choice - blue and white cultivars tend to be the most fragrant.

Datura is also very fragrant, but it is a night bloomer - my oh my if you step out on a warm, humid night look out!

I like to exercise after dark on hot days, and I'll tell you, it's a whole 'nother olfactory world out there at night, the scents from night bloomers can be amazing! This year we didn't have many really warm nights so didn't get to enjoy as much, but other years - WOW!

Also, throw in some oriental lily bulbs - another extremely fragrant flower. Yes, the bloom period is short, but it's a flower and fragrance I look forward to every summer. I often think that must be what heaven smells like, if heaven has a scent...

Many old-fashioned roses are heavily perfumed, as are rugosa roses. I have rugosa roses scattered throughout my beds, and not only are they very fragrant, they are very low-maintenance (unlike the typical modern rose). For more info, visit the rose forum.

Stocks for sure, they like it cool but flower prematurely if not planted from transplants soon, early in spring, can stand frost. Nicotiana is a good one.
