They look like somniferum poppies which get very large, to about 4 feet here. They grow very fast and are usually started on site because they do not transplant well. Of course spring is the normal time to start them. I would not worry about fertilizer. If I have guessed wrong on the variety, ignore my comments. Al

You are right on Calistoga .. when I got the seeds, all the instructions said was in zone 8 start them in the late fall and they will flower earlier because they like the cold.

I grew 6 sunflowers in this planter last year and one got over 8 feet tall and did splendidly. I figured if sunflowers could manage inside a planter that poppies would too.
