Hi lynnbe, I agree with making the concrete steps the same width as the porch. For the railings perhaps something more contemporary and minimal can be considered.

Hi Lynnbe, Your house is beautiful and lends itself to unique ideas. Some years ago we had steps built off our back porch which returned on both sides giving three sides of steps I can't seem to think of any other ways to describe them. The steps to the left and the right would fill in the area beside your current steps which look bare. Your steps would be more tied to your porch if they were built of the same stone that is used on your house. The stair tread would be safer if made of a slab of limestone or cement with the risers being shorter than standard..maybe four inches, and faced with the stone. The steps could certainly be as wide as you want. I used part of the "turn-back" as a place to put pots of flowers. It was a great spot to sit as well. We did not have a rail, but you could easily place one along the stairs going straight off the porch and the turn-back on the taller side of the house. A dark brown or bronze color in square metal would be attractive. Of course, a less expensive choice would be the same design using wood stained the same color as the decorative porch timbers. That would tie in very nicely with the woodsy surroundings. Good luck with deciding just what is right for you.

Nice House! Paint or stain the steps to match the darker stones or the brown wood, add a railing on all sides of the porch and down the steps to match the brown wood.
