if you're using perforated pipe you might be fine with a "regular" shovel. That way you can dig a trench the width of the shovel and add some drainage rock around the pipe. If it were non-perforated I'd say the trenching shovel might be good. I think the idea of the trenching shovel is that it allow you to dig through your lawn with less damage than a spade would do. The curvature of the trenching shovels also allows for an easier scooping motion to get dirt out of the trench.

I use my trenching shovel (don't know if it's 4" or 5") as my primary tool for digging up deep-rooted plants, clearing mud from narrow places, and any number of tasks. Worth it for its own sake.

Trenching Shovels are only valuable if you are digging a trench of want a small hole. I would guess that you fall into both groups. It will keep you from moving a ton more dirt and reduce the damage you do to surrounding areas.

Always get the right tool.

I don't know about trenching shovels...but my drainage spade is my FAVORITE shovel. It's fabulous for transplanting...and great for digging between the roots of established trees. I think mine is a 16" drain spade...with a 27" D handle. (Fiberglass handle)
