I have seen that done in several beach homes on the Oregon Coast. A nice surprise gift from the ocean of a great piece of driftwood - en voila-a mantel. If you I've near the ocean, you can also find stocks of driftwood at souvenir stands (or at east I have seen it at the coast here). It's really a cool idea isn't it.

The driftwood used for this mantel was left natural - no wax applied. It was carefully cleaned with blown air to remove any debris in the nooks and crevices.
