laying ducks

I have a Blue Swedish duck that started laying last month for the first time. She laid about 7 eggs and then just stopped. I have four ducks, two male and two female and the other female, Betty, lays an egg everyday, but Gertie gave up after just 7. Is there something wrong or is she just getting uppity! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Anna

Ducks don't get "uppity", whatever that's supposed to mean.

It's fairly common for pullets who are just beginning to lay, to start and stop like that until they get into full production, or until the daylength increases more. The weather can also affect it, and some areas are still getting extreme cold which can interrupt some birds' laying cycles.

It's also very possible that she is laying somewhere else, and you haven't discovered her spot yet.

I also have ducks, and in January we had some nice mild weather - everybody started mating and a few ducks laid eggs. Then when it cooled off a couple of ducks abandoned their nests.

I have one who has slowly "lost" every egg out of her nest -she's been setting a long time on infertile eggs and they are starting to explode.

Right now the weather has turned mild, but in order to get the girls to lay in the nest boxes, I have shut every one up in the coop with the chickes and two drakes. There isn't a bit of mating going on. The chickens are laying faithfullly, but the ducks are not. I have one duck on a nest who seems to be taking good care of her eggs, but she's older and a great mom. However she should have hatched out last week.

The rest are young and didn't cover their eggs, left them to chill. So I'll have to search out the corners to find the eggs that are now potential sink bombs.

I think it is normal for things to follow the weather and the amount of sunlight. I will let every one out for a few days to get some sun, then they will all go back into the coop until they decide to "get to business". I also have an incubator that I plan to fill with any 'stray' eggs.

It is a fact that ducks can find some really odd hiding places for their nests. Under trees, sheds, inside boxes, We had one next and hatch sucessfully under my old mares feed box. I think the old mare liked that, she would dribble feed on the nest.

    Hope that helps.

My pekin started laying about 2 weeks ago,I think I found 13 eggs! The problem was that my hens started to add their eggs to hers...it was a mixed up nest...I'm incubating 5 pekin eggs now...with a little luck I'll have a larger family soon! :)

Thanks for the info on the ducks. Gertie started laying again and we found the eggs different places on different days! It's a hunt and seek kind of thing I guess. She didn't lay anything today so I guess when she decides what she is doing and gets used to what is happening to her all will be well. It really doesn't matter. I was just worried about her and thought something might me wrong and wanted to fix it if it was. I worry about them and want everything to be ok.

    Thanks Again....
