One of my little nannies has a row of warty looking things all on one side of her mouth. She hasn't slowed down on her eating, but they look sore to me. Anybody know what it is and what I should do about it?
Has she been eating tree bark? Mine actually get blood under the skin after eating tree bark. The skin goes through a long process of healing and pealing after. They could be small splinters or stinging nettles?? Lisa
Could it be sore mouth? One of mine had it and it's now making it's way through the herd. Check out the below link or do a google search on sore mouth.
Sure sounds like it could be soremouth. Really not sure what to do about it. Most of the info I'm finding says it runs it's course, but does the whole herd have to get it? This little doe is expected to kid any day now.
I've got about 30 in my doe herd. Not all have been infected, but about 10 have it now. If you could keep the infected one separate from the others they may not get it. Mine all have mild cases, just small sores on the mouth. I tried to keep them separate but then I would discover new "victims" in the main herd. It was getting difficult to keep them separate ("sick pen" was getting full!) so we have them all together again and are just letting it run it's course. My original suspect "carrier" was a little bottle baby billy that we purchased. He was the first one to have it. We noticed several sores on his body at first. Just felt like a bunch of small scabs all over him. At first we thought he had gotten into a pile of fire ants - but then we figured out what it really was. He is doing just fine now and is completely healed. We just let it run its course with him. We think of it as "chicken pox" for goats!
Sore-mouth can be quite painful for the small kids . but there is medicine for it that any vet supply usually carries it . once it has went through a herd it usually wont come back . Zeke
My mom and I have 100 goats and has sealed with sore mouth so many times. If u have other goats put that goat with them so that they will catch it to. Soremouth is like chicken pocks. They cant get it again. The soremouth will go away on its own.
