I've read/heard that you can plant "organic" potatoes that you buy from the grocery store because they have most likely not been treated with a growth inhibitor.

I suspect store bought taters would work, but I'd suggest cutting a few and letting them chit (then plant the nicest ones)

I have planted store bought potatoes and they will grow and produce.....never had one that did not. The problem is that their yield is very low... I wait for them to sprout and cut them in to pieces that have a couple of eyes on each piece... let them harden off and plant....the yield is about half of the seed potatoes I buy at the feed store...
