Boots, how about you try it and let us know? Sounds like an idea with potential, especially if you are not trying to grow grocery store quality celery, just some skinny stems for flavor. In fact, I 'm going to try it now. This cool weather is just right for such an experiment. It could be that too much has been cut off for new roots to grow, though. I'll try to remember to report back.

Leave a few of the small stalks in the center attached to the bottom. You can root the celery by either dipping the bottom in rooting powder and shallow planting it in soil or by suspending it in water. I prefer the first method. The will produce roots out of the side of the bottom. Once rooted you can plant it in the garden or in a pot. The plants don't produce as well as plants I start from seed but they do produce staks which I harvest individually for cooking.

great,going to try this. i did have 1 in water and it started to grow,BUT then the outer "leaves" on the plant started to rot. thanks for all the info guys!! joyce
