Rain Barrel on the Cheap

I found four blue barrels at my parent's lake house in the Adirondacks. They were marked "sand". I guess they were leftovers from the highway department? Anyway, no one knew how they got there so one of them ended up in my back yard. It was a gaudy bright blue so I just got done spray painting it. between the paint, the screen on top the spigot, the drill bit and the sealant, I spent about $15 on it vice buying one for $80 online. Plus I think it looks better.

WOW - i have some metal barrells - might have to do the same!

I love mine, but I have a hand pump on mine and my cover has just enoguh of a hole cut into it to let the down spout poor in. I left mine blue as it sits behind the shop where no one sees it. The pump was under $5.00.

we found some used food grade olive barrels at a nearby co-op for $15 a piece. after buying a spigot and overflow and some sealant, they come to about $20-25 each. We bought more hardware than is actually needed, so some can go back to home depot.

the olive barrels are great because they come with lids like mason jars- a flat piece and a ring that screws on. we just screwed the ring over some old window screen.

so far i have had no problems! especially since the same ones online looked to cost about $100!
