If they are particle board, they probably won't last a full season. That stuff swells and falls apart as soon as it gets wet. I would also be hesitant to put edible plants in such close proximity to it without investigating what possible toxins there might be.

What if I wrapped it in plastic or a tarp?I thought particle board was kind of similar to sawdust.

Particle board is sawdust with some kind of resin, pressed hard into a board. When it gets wet, it swells and the particles become detached from each other. That causes it to disintegrate, unfortunately. If you sprayed every surface with a coating of polyurethane, that might seal it enough to get some use out of it as a planter. I don't think you could get an impermeable seal with wrap or a tarp.

I did this last year with a compatmentalized computer desk console. It fell apart before fall. Just disintegrated. And it looked so solid in the spring!

I did this with a bookshelf and it is lasting well into the second year I believe part of the construction is particle board and parly real wood but not sure. Give it a try.

I have an old bookshelf I was going to use but I was told I could line the insides with Duck tape to keep it all together and help it last longer. but hearing how you all say it swells I wonder if I can get a good seal everywhere. and how much duck tape. I'd have to use.
