Great Find! How exciting!

That's so sad about people doing illegal dumping! Here where I live we pay a flat rate, about $10 a month I think, to have garbage pick-up twice a week and trash pick-up once every two weeks. The city picks both up every day of the week except for Sunday, somewhere in the city, and it sure cuts the illegal dumping out entirely. It's a great system and I'm very happy to pay for it. Frugality comes in many guises, I guess.

We pay more than you do for pickup, and they have just recently stopped bulk pickup, because they said the dumps around here charge too much, so if we want it picked up, we have to pay so much a cubic yard. I don't illegally dump anything, I try to give away what I can't sell, and if I have to, I pay someone to haul it to the dump, which is cheaper than having the city pick it up. We also aren't allowed to put anything in plastic bags for yard pickup. We had a big meeting the other night because they're trying to raise our taxes, in some cases by over 300%, and still we won't have any services other places have. I'd love to leave here, but where would I go?

Hey, if people are going to dump stuff, better to have some frugal soul pick it up and use it than for it to just lay there, right?

Oh yes, I'm so glad that there are people out there who have a conscience about how they treat the environment, and I'm glad that you're able to turn a little profit on it too. Even when there is good trash pick up it's almost criminal the things that hit the curb every single night that could be put to good use by a charity or whatever.

Oh, and everywhere has it's problems, Mobile is smack in the center of a lot of heavy chemical industries so it's sure not perfect.

I too wish there was a mechanism for sharing unwanted stuff - i want TONS of bricks, and i know that when places are demolished, they got to dumps/landfills. I am working on it however, slowly. Have been discussing the issues with some friends in 'high places'....progress is slow however.

Talk to your local city officials (I know, the problem is that they have to be receptive) about having a place for stuff to go for a 'while' before being disposed of - like at local recycling centers.

I too take stuff to charity - and hoard plastic pots, etc. Offer to come get bricks, leftover wood, etc.

Check this site out, - and share as you see fit. It is better than nothing....at www.wastetrade.org - it is more geared towards businesses - but you could always pass it along to your local paper, etc., to try to help out overall...

Rosey, you might look under YAHOO Groups to see if there is a Freecycle group set up for where you live. I'd heard about these groups for awhile, but we just got one in our area and it's great! You post what you've got to give away and others post what they're looking for.

HI Cheryl - thanks. I have already posted to freecycle - and got rid of a sleeper sofa YAY! But, haven't lucked into any bricks or anything - yet. One person was getting rid of some - but i was too late. However, i am definitely gonna keep trying! :)

go to freecycle.org (not com) You can search for a group in your area.

Does anyone know how to find out what house or developements are being torn down or made in my area? I am in GA.

Be sure to check out www.craigslist.org. If you live in or near one of the cities listed, there is a section for freebies, and a wanted section also. I have done several good trades, and given away a lot of goodies that were usable. Helped me get rid of them without wasting trash space. Also great for unwanted larger plants- especially dig your own.
