bicycle query: frugal

I want to motorise my bicycle.

About 60 years ago, I've been told, some people put little petrol/gas-powered motors on ordinary bicycles. When they wanted to start the motor they would pedal like mad. When it fired they could sit back to recover.

Does anyone know of a URL or thread where I could find out more - to the point of modifying a modern motor for this purpose?
