water heater for chickens

This morning we woke up with snow on the ground and inside the chicken houses, the water was running. Now I know it is just a matter of time before it will be frozen in the mornings. I heard that someone uses a cheap little aquarium heater (50 watt) but don't understand how it is submersed in the water.

We use the hanging waterers with a 5 gallon bucket hanging higher to supply the water. If the heater was in the bucket, it still wouldn't keep the little hose from freezing. What do all of you do? We have 75 chickens in side by side hoop houses. They are surrounded with hay bales and covered on top with tarps and solar pool covers. We can string an extension cord out there to heat the water but I don't want to heat the entire hoop houses.
