My first egg

Well, its an eggciting topic, don'cha think!?

There is a bit of controversy. I also bought a new Silkie. The egg 'appears' to a first timer egg with streaks and marks. I have no clue who plopped this. It was on bare ground, like it snuck up and attacked! Not in a nest box or a place that one would expect it.

My mother did confirm that 'the three sisters' were Light Bramahs... sheesh, now I'm not sure about my spelling. I NEED a catalog.

The silkie was sold to my as a Frizzle. And we had to drag her around, to be peered at unceremoniously, poor dear. I didn't wish to bring home a boy, she had spurs, I've no clue towards the matter. I live too close to neighbors that would have something to say about listening to a boy, never mind how melodious!

Pretty eggciting stuff, I must say. I danced around acting totally stupid and grandmotherish. Lord help me when real (grand) children arrive under my care!

Pretty proud of my girls tonight. Missed the celebretory announcement that hens tell every one what is going on, clucking/chiruping/making a lot of #$&* noise. Missed it all, except the collection part!

Congratulations on the first egg! Some breeds seem to be much slower in maturing than others.

Enjoyed the chicken tractor photos. I had checked that book out from the library a while back, and it's nice to see one in action.

The last photo of chicken looks similar to my pair of Spreckled Sussex. They give us a nice-sized light brown egg.

I ended up with five roosters by accident; three were sexed as females. They can be heard through our canyon 1.4 miles away. Luckily, they are good company for our pig and get along well. We did have to make the rooster eating area unreachable by the pig, though........

How often is the tractor moved?

Yep, TR Forester, I keep chickens.

Pamela thanks for the link, I will check that out!

The biggest reason I built the tractor was to remove some of the large insect population in my yard. I also compost (where I know Forester from) and have a whole new population of insects related to that. I really want less snails, slugs and pincher bugs. All the rest of them gone is a bonus! To get the ground really vacuumed, I move the tractor every day. It is amazing what they will do to an 8X10 patch of ground in 24 hours!

I only have five chickens, and they are so well fed from the environment, it is tough to get them to eat kitchen scraps. Might help if I had a few more, but I don't so I'm working with what I have. Silly girls are out eating cherry tomatos off the vine, but wouldn't touch them when they came out in the scrap bucket. Steep learning curve for me here.

So, the black glossy hen with speckles is a Cochin bantam. I don't know yet if the Silkie is a bantam, but the three Light Brahmas are. Thank you so much for that link, I spend lots of time there, learning. And redesigning the NEXT chicken tractor.
