black nightshade (garden huckelberry)

hey does any know anything about the poison in black nightshade ( solanum nigrum) because it has recently started growing round here (came in with some topsiol for the flowerbedds of the flats the built nextdoor) and i wany to make jam from it

boiling destroys tropane alkaloids as far as i know but i would like some reasurance on whether there are any risks involved with the process and i thought this wud be thebest place to ask

oh and as i haven't been here in a while hi everybody :)

Rip the stuff out and turn it into compost ... it's not worth the risk.

heathen1, i do have another but similar thread on the herbs forum that has several replies, might you be confusing it with that? i think it actually has the same title... imaginative aren't i

There is a huckleberry plant in the States that produces an edible black berry; your Solanum must look something like it. I would not chance it if I were you.

The huckleberry we have over here can be eaten raw; I've done this, so I know it's not the same plant.

Do you get elderberries? They would probably be safer and more fun to work with, esp since elderberry flowers can be steeped to make a fragrant tea that is good for bronchitis, and the ripe berries can be made into jellies and wine!

oh how many elderberries grow here, i.e. loads and loads

it is the same plant, but i'm not accounting for geographic differences leading to slight genetic variance

hmm, maybe i should err(sp?) on the side of caution
