No but the early pears are usually inferior in flavor so I would get a later pear unless you have lots of room for many pears.

Early Golden is supposed to be pretty good on the east coast but I'm not
growing it; again I think its main claim to fame is earliness.

I grow only early pears (I think I am up to ~15). I've let few crop but I don't think the taste is inferior to what is available at the time. They do have a very short window where they are any good before they break down.

I have the aforementioned but can recall about it. Citron de Carmes, I grafted and it has been the best so far, but tastes vary. For instance, I despise apples.

Kury, what will you do with so many highly perishable pears in such a short window?

Kurt, I don't actually have early pears myself, I am going by what writers commonly state, e.g. the Pears of New York for example. I think most of the breeding work on pears was done for later varieties since they could be eaten through the winter, a very important quality in bygone days. Nearly all the pear breeding work was done 100+ years ago, all the common pears in the market today are at least that old. You do have a point that what matters today is what other fruits may be in season at the time to compete for the favor of your taste buds, and if they do well there they are a winner.

I planted this kind of pear along with rwo other varieties 25 years ago. I love Bella. Yes it ripens late June - early July, well ahead of other pears. The flavor is delicate. I am very glad to have it both for fresg eating and for pear sauce and pear butter.
