The Gold Spice pear is tasty- small, but lives up to its name.

I like Flemish Beauty too. Just be aware that it's fire blight prone.

bonniein, Ayers is a great old southern pear that has remarkable hardiness that it can be grow in zone 3. I have one upstate NY. Scaper's selections are good. Also look at Maxine, it has fireblight resistance and ripens a few weeks later then Ayers. Johnsons carries Maxine. Excellent nursery.

I have Maxine as my pollinator for my Ayers. Johnson's
is a good supplier of both ,but they are sold out
of everything.

From the little that I've read, I'm surprised to see that no one has mentioned Seckel?

bonniein, folks here don't mentioned Seckel because we are mostly middle aged and Seckle can take ten or more year to fruit!

Wow, I had no clue that Seckle takes 10 years to fruit.
Is it worth the very long wait though?

2 quick things,
1) thanks for backing up my reccomendations aceofspades. I know pears here down in Texas but I was making my reccomendations based on hearsay for a nothern location, so thanks for the varification. 2) If you like Seckle pears (and I love them) you can probably bring them in to fruiting much faster by planting one that is on the rootstock oldhome x farmingdale #333. At least that worked for me. #333 has a reputation for dwarfing the size of the fruit but with Seckle who could notice! My Seckle bloomed and fruited the second year after planting for me but unfortunately it suffers from lack of chill a lot of years here also.

What about Bartlett? Will the Ayers and Bartlett trees pollinate each other? Please say yes, as that is what I've planted next to each other.

Frank, don't waste your space on Keiffers. They are a coarse grainy pear, better for deer. Warren/Magness are the most disease free without compromising flavor.

I have an ayers and after 4 years am getting my first crop. How do I know when they are ready to pick?

^ when squirrels start taking them - they're ripe - I have four pear trees here in SC my ayers is huge but may have too few chill hours - it has not had fruit yet - my Hood pear tree produces huge but , not tasty pears - moonglow pears are great + juicy Immunox and Serenade sprays finally mitigated years of fire blight and cedar rust problems thankfully

Will moonglow and Ayers pollinate each other?

my Monglow already has fruit on it , the Hood pear tree still has some flowers , the Bartlet and Ayers are just now at bud break

I grafted Ayers onto moon glow specifically for pollination. Ayers is a week ahead of moon glow but seems there is still a lot of overlap. So, yes - Ayers and moonglow will pollinate each other.
