creating cement tiles

I am updating my 30 year old red brick fireplace that has a wood burning insert. I have removed the ugly black metal surround and now have to find something to cover the brick before I can continue with the project. After pricing tiles (the really nice ceramic ones are outrageously priced) I thought I would try to make cement tiles to surround the wood burner. Each tile will have leaf and fern impressions on the surface. Has anyone tried this? Do you think the cement will hold up to the radiant heat from the fireplace insert? Any suggestions as to what type of adhesive to use to stick the cement tiles to the cement backer board?
