Yes, you can use dirt, but some of it will stick, maybe even most of it.

You might want to try a tub of damp sand, instead. Form your mold and firm the damp sand, then use 'tufa or concrete 'patties' and press and smooth them gently/firmly into your mold. Sand will stick, too, but it will look more like you intended to do it that way.

Make a few small sample projects so you'll get to know how if feels, and how it works.

Thanks, I see all these beautiful pictures of old looking troughs and I want to create them but I don't know how difficult it is. Would I have better luck using a regular box mold, then brushing with a steel brush? The small idea is good. I've probably got too grande in mind!

Some of my most primative pots have been made in a large pan/bowl. I rolled & twisted newspaper, taped it to the sides like spokes or however. Then put plastic as a mold release and packed the turfa on that. The turfa will reposition them to some degree. Take a look and it will be the one titled twisted newspaper. Keep in mind that the thickness will have to be thicker because of the space the newspaper is taking. Hum looks like I need to get some snow pictures moved.

Love your twisted newspaper pots. Great idea. I also like your leaves. Did you air brush? Face pots are great too. I would like to know if you used a face mold or carved the face?

Thanks for looking. The newspaper pots are pretty easy.Are you in a climate where it's warm enough to work on turfa? I cleaned the shed out yesterday in hopes it warms soon.
I just use a brush to paint the leaves. I use a wash to soak the leaf then just paint away. Ending with a dry brush to blend. I used a plastic mold from craft store for the faces. I haven't gotten into carving. It is hard for me to do this because of the time involved and getting it before it is to dry. I did the grots freehand but not carved.

Not warm enough yet. Can't wait to get started. I have been planning all winter. Maybe next week.
