air bubbles

Hi all

I have recently bought some molds to make pavers. They are turning out nicely and I am using a mix of 1 part each portland, fine sand and fine perlite plus 1 tbsp admix. I have been pouring a small amount of mix and then tapping etc before adding the rest of the mix to the mold and repeating the tapping. This has reduced the size of the air bubbles from rather large to small now but I would like to eliminate them totally. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions. I use a back vibrator Homemedic I think is the brand. Pour some in the mold and vibrate for a minute or two than add more untill full.

Hi Bees,

Peak suggested putting it on your dryer while it is on, and it will vibrate the bubbles out.

I have also learned if you put too much mold release on the mold it will also leave bubbles.~~~Lois

Before you fill your molds, make up a mix of just the Portland and admix. Make it a paintable consistency. Then using a paintbrush, paint a thin coat onto your mold, and then proceed as usual. This works for me.

I haven't had any trouble with the surface chipping. I haven't had much trouble working with a neat mix of just Portland and acrylic admix. I leave it in the mold a little longer than most, to keep it from drying out too fast. A neat mix will dry very fast. Almost like plaster of Paris. That's the only time I've seen it crack. The humidity is pretty high around here. Just make sure you keep it wet. I don't seal my stuff.
